Lifelong football fan Adrian Bailey was lucky enough to be at Wembley when England won the World Cup in 1966 and will be talking about that once-in-a-lifetime experience at Sedgley Library on Saturday 9 May at 1pm.
His book ‘1966: England’s Glory Match – An Eyewitness Account of England’s World Cup Victory and Football in the Sixties’ includes tales of his life at the time too – providing fascinating snapshots of Britain in the 1960s.
“With this year’s World Cup only weeks away, Adrian’s talk is a timely and nostalgic look back at a milestone moment in English football history,” said Sedgley Library Manager Tracy Rollason.
“He has also lent us a framed montage of photos for the occasion – one of them signed by Geoff Hurst.
“Adrian was standing on the terraces behind the goal when Hurst scored his famous hat-trick – giving him a bird’s eye view of history in the making. But his book and his talk aren’t just about football. He was a student during the Swinging Sixties and there will no doubt be anecdotes around that.”
Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs Dudley Libraries on behalf of the council.
“Adrian Bailey has enjoyed a high-profile career, and we’re delighted to welcome him to Sedgley Library for what promises to be an enthralling event,” said Stephanie Rhoden, GLL Partnership Manager.
“There can’t be many people who can claim such an intriguing insight into the 1966 World Cup and, with this year’s fixtures almost upon us, it’s a perfect time to reminisce. Let’s hope that 2026 sees history repeating itself!”
