Gll’s Better leisure centres throughout Cornwall are offering a free swim to every child completing this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
The 2023 theme is games and sports. Developed in collaboration with the Youth Sport Trust, ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ celebrates play and participation and is encouraging children to engage in reading, games and sports, in the way that best suits them.
To take part, children sign up at their local library and read six library books of their choice. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to guide them, and rewards are collected along the way. On completion, each child is awarded a certificate and a free swim voucher which can be redeemed at Better leisure centres in Bude, Saltash, Liskeard, St Austell, Bodmin, Newquay, Truro, Helston and St Ives.
“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Cornwall Council and local libraries on this very important initiative,” said James Curry, Head of Service for GLL in Cornwall.
“Encouraging children to mix reading with keeping active over the school holidays is the perfect way of keeping them physically and mentally healthy, whilst also providing cost-effective fun and entertainment that inspires imagination and broadens horizons.
“We look forward to welcoming young readers throughout the summer in Cornwall.”
