In an area with as much coastline as Cornwall, sea safety is paramount. Lifeguards patrol many Cornish beaches during the summer months and large numbers of lives have been saved as a result.
Newquay Surf Lifesaving Club has more than 300 members ranging from 5 years old upwards. Divided into four age groups, much of the club’s training takes place in Newquay Leisure World swimming pool where the club books sessions five hours a week.
“It’s vital to have that leisure centre facility and the staff there couldn’t be more helpful,” said Sue Butler, the club’s president.
“Cornwall is rightfully renowned for its amazing coast but teaching adults and children the skills they need to keep as safe as possible in the water is essential. Having regular access to the centre means our members can continue building on their ability levels over the winter and we’re very grateful for the excellent relationship we have with manager Adam Riddle and his team.”
Operating under the Better brand, GLL is a charitable social enterprise that runs leisure centres throughout the county on behalf of Cornwall Council.
“Supporting local communities is an essential part of the GLL ethos,” said senior manager Amelia Kitchen. “Covid and the current cost of living crisis have challenged our resources, but we remain committed to providing facilities that help improve lives.
“Newquay Surf Lifesaving Club does a fantastic job and we’re delighted to be working with them.”
