Affordable rents, business accessibility and a strong sense of community all combined to make 2022 a positive year for Camborne.
That’s according to BID Manager Anna Pascoe who said several new businesses opened last year. Visitor footfall was good over the festive period – helped in no small part by the record number of entries in Camborne’s annual Christmas shop window display competition.
“The theme was the twelve days of Christmas and more than 70 businesses entered with some amazing interpretations and displays,” she said. “The standard was so high we had to create a new category of ‘Excellent’, alongside the usual ‘Commended’, ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Outstanding’ awards.
“Our judges had some very difficult decisions to make and the fact that only 3 points separated our top three winners is testament to the considerable effort that everyone put in to put on a show and make Christmas as special and successful as it could be.”
The window display first prize went to the Cornwall Animal Hospital charity shop, second went to Up Memory Lane interiors and third went to Cards for All Occasions.
With the aim of encouraging people to explore as many businesses as possible, the Business Improvement District team built on the success of the loyalty card scheme introduced early last year by running a What3Words competition in the first twelve days of December.
“Each day we released a geo tag location with a clue,” said Anna. “Those getting all the places correct were then entered in a prize draw for £20 of gift vouchers to be spent locally. Kevin Springall was our lucky winner.”
As one of four towns in Cornwall to get government town deal funding, Camborne looks set for a bright new year.
“There’s a lot happening in the months to come – including the launch of Project A-Void Phase 2 in February or March which is all about improving existing premises and filling vacant shops,” said Anna. “It’s one of the Town Deal projects already approved for funding and will make a real difference to the town centre.
