Local people aged sixty plus in the Reading and Oxfordshire areas are being invited to take part in two active ageing sporting events at Rivermead Leisure Centre in Reading.

The first, on Wednesday 30 September, is a timed swim when mixed teams of between 2 to 6 people will swim as many lengths as they can in 45 minutes. Part of GLL’s National Club Games, the winning team’s score will contribute to GLL’s national leaderboard.

The second event at Rivermead on Wednesday 7 October is the Better Club Games. Providing an opportunity to play pickleball, badminton, table tennis and short tennis, participants will represent their area in a day of friendly competition and community spirit.

Competitors can either register as a pair or be placed in a pair once they’ve signed up. All abilities are welcome, no previous experience is required, and trophies will be awarded to winners of individual sports and overall winners.

Charitable social enterprise GLL operates more than 250 leisure centres nationwide and its Better Club Games programme is celebrating 20 years of active ageing across the UK.

“Applications are welcome from leisure centre members and non-members and the Better Club Games entry cost of just £4.50 covers all activities, refreshments, a t-shirt and a participation medal,” said Steph Smith, Area Community Sport Manager.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played a sport before as there’s lots of support and encouragement. The day is all about having fun, whilst being as active as possible and meeting new people.”

“Why not give it a try?”
