It was finding the first chapter of an unfinished book by her late mother that inspired Kay Louise Bowen, from Sedgley, to write her first novel Secrets.

Published by Austin Macauley and about to be showcased at book fairs in New York, Miami and Mexico, Kay’s story carries on where her mum’s left off – culminating in a well-reviewed novel about the impact of secrets.

Kay will be talking about her unexpected journey from adult education tutor to debut author in a free talk at Dudley Library on Thursday 20 November at 4pm.

Describing her achievement in a radio interview as ‘life changing’, Kay confesses she never aspired to be a writer until discovering what her mum wrote in a computer folder after she had died.

Secrets is dedicated to her mother’s memory and Kay is now busy writing a sequel.

“We’re really looking forward to Kay’s talk and book signing,” said Sharon Whitehouse, Library Manager. “As far as I’m aware, no-one has ever become a successful author in quite the way she has.”

Two authors from local publishers Tenebrous Texts will be launching their new books at the library on Wednesday 26th November at 7 pm. Sadie Kaye’s From Earth and Sky ‘is a retelling and exploration of Norse mythology and Spun by Air and Sunlight’s The Ocean of Grief is a collection of poems about grief and loss.

Both authors will tell a little about themselves and read extracts from their books.

Sukvinder Grewal, a psychotherapist from Dudley, is giving a free talk about his new book The Bus Driver’s Son at Dudley Library on Thursday 4 December at 4pm.

Described as a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale, the book draws from the writer’s own experiences and memories of being a teenager in 1980s England.
