Andrew George MP, Councillors Cynthia Holman, Mike Thomas and Damien Willey joined local GLL Sport Foundation athletes in a walk around Better Helston Sports Centre during its recent open weekend.

Hosted by GLL Senior Partnership Manager Amelia Kitchen, the VIP guests saw different activities taking place and chatted to those taking part.

“We talked about the importance of exercise in improving physical and mental health, teaching children to swim, our future plans and the cost-effective summer holiday programme we have in place,” said Amelia.

“The programme includes kids being able to swim for £1 between 9am and 10am and our very popular Aquasplash pool inflatable sessions.

“I’m delighted that so many people came along to the open days and am looking forward to a busy, active summer ahead.”

A team from the local library also attended to promote this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, as children successfully completing it in Helston will be entitled to a free swim.

‘As a local councillor, I recently had the pleasure of visiting our community’s leisure centre, and I left feeling both impressed and inspired,” said Councillor Cynthia Holman.

“ The centre is a shining example of how public facilities can promote health, inclusion, and community spirit all under one roof.’

Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs nine leisure centres across Cornwall on behalf of the council.
