Around 500 free swims for serving members of the armed forces and veterans were recorded at Maindy Centre in Cardiff during the last three months of 2024.
Following the significant increase in funding for the Armed Forces Free Swimming Scheme (AFFS) just announced by the Welsh Government, that number looks set to rise further in line with demand.
Past and current personnel can swim for free during public swimming sessions at Maindy by showing their defence privilege card as proof of eligibility and registering for a booking card.
Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs the leisure centre on behalf of Cardiff City Council.
“We’re proud to be able to offer the scheme which was first introduced in 2016,” said Anthony Hayes, General Manager.
“Our centre is close to Maindy Barracks, and we’re always pleased to welcome people from our local armed forces community.
“The Welsh Government has almost doubled the scheme’s annual budget across Wales from £45,000 to £80,000 and that promises even greater take up locally.
“It feels good to recognise those who serve or have served their country and provide free access to a form of exercise that can do so much for physical and mental health.”
