Camborne’s festivities began in grand style on Friday when 8-year-old Cicely pushed the giant plunger and lit up the town with Christmas lights.

Thousands of people gathered to watch the big switch-on and soak up a festive atmosphere that started at 3pm with stage entertainment in Commercial Square, street performances and an impressive children’s lantern parade.

Organised by BID Camborne, the event proved a thrilling launchpad for the festive season.

“We were really lucky with the weather, and everyone involved worked very hard to make it a truly momentous occasion,” said BID Manager Anna Pascoe.

“The lanterns were amazing and there was a strong sense of people wanting to celebrate, regardless of all the doom and gloom that seems to surround us at the moment.

“The Camborne community is renowned for coming together when times are tough and being there for each other. Never was that more apparent than on Friday when everyone seemed to be smiling.”

Cicely was given the honour of switching on the lights after being nominated by her mum, Samantha, who was picked out in the loyalty card draw.

“I’m so excited,” said Cicely, who dressed as an elf for the occasion. “I’m taking part in the lantern parade with my class first and then they’ll watch me switching on the lights. My teacher told the whole school what was happening.”

The theme for this year’s Christmas event is the 12 days of Christmas and eye-catching shop window displays have been created to spread the festive cheer.

“We’re hugely grateful for the support we’ve had from local businesses,” said Anna Pascoe. “Particular thanks must go to Apollo Bingo, Speedy Hire, R G Kellow Ltd, Macsalvors, Firecrest, A R Newport, Millstone Sound and, of course Camborne Town Council who organised the lantern parade. The switch-on wouldn’t have been the success it was without them.”
