Work is underway at Newquay Leisure World to create a new, functional fitness space.

Functional fitness is exercise that supports everyday life and includes movements like walking, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting and lunging to work multiple areas of the body and strengthen muscles.

An outdoor area at the centre is being transformed into the undercover, well-equipped facility which is expected to open in mid-December.

The investment is being financed by GLL, the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs Newquay Leisure World on behalf of Cornwall Council.

“We’re very excited about this project, as it will really enhance our health and fitness offering,” said GLL Senior General Manager Amelia Kitchen.

“Functional training has become very popular as it focuses on exercises that mimic everyday actions. Its many benefits include better mobility and balance and helping your body become more efficient at burning calories and losing weight. It’s simple and safe for almost everyone and is a fun way of being active and getting fit.”

As well as developing the new space, Newquay Leisure World’s fitness class programme is also being expanded.

“We’re very happy to show people how we can help them with their fitness journey and to introduce them to members of our amazing team,” said Amelia.

“We’d also love to hear from instructors who may be interested in joining us at this exciting time in the centre’s development. Keeping fit and healthy over the winter months has never been more important and group exercise is an excellent way of keeping motivated.”
