Opening her new café at Saltash Leisure Centre on 30 May is a dream come true for Dawn Couch.

Having worked at Saltash Community School as canteen manager for 18 years, the avid home baker and professional caterer won the tender to re-launch the café after it was closed during Covid restrictions.

Not-for-profit social enterprise provider GLL runs the leisure centre on behalf of Cornwall Council.

“Dawn has extensive knowledge of healthy eating and delicious homemade food, and we look forward to welcoming her and her business to the leisure centre,” said GLL senior manager Ben Wilkinson.

“It’s important to be able to offer good, nutritious refreshment to our customers and the local community and that’s what this new café will be offering in a friendly, relaxed setting.”

Dawn, who began her career as a stewardess on the Golden Hind Pullman service, is excited by the prospect of her new venture.

“I’ll be offering hot and cold meals, daily specials and a range of snacks that include homemade cakes, cookies and tray bakes,” she said.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do. It really is a dream come true.”
