Camborne air cadets have completed the Town Trail Time Trial and loved it so much they want to do it again.
Since some of those taking part had injuries, there were both running and walking groups – with the runners competing against each other and the time trial clock.
The one-mile trail starts at the Trevithick memorial statue at Camborne library and includes the Masonic Hall, the Parish Vestry and Clink, the Church of St Martin and St Meriadoc, the Old Market House, Tyack’s Hotel, the original Camborne School of Mines site, St Meriasek’s Well, Commercial Square, the Literary Institute, Wesley Chapel and the Centenary Wesleyan Chapel.
“One of the cadets’ main goals this year is to reconnect with their community and be proud of Camborne, where a lot of them live,” said Flight Lieutenant Sam Cairns, who is Officer Commanding of the Camborne and District Squadron. “They asked if they could do the trail and were so enthusiastic about what they discovered that they spent the whole evening session on it, rather than just half as originally planned. They’ve also asked if they can do it again.
“They were particularly interested in the old mining school plaque on what is now Argos and really enjoyed looking at the Masonic Hall because of the building itself.”
The Town Trail Time Trial has been funded by the Government’s Welcome Back Fund and organised by BID Camborne as part of a campaign to encourage people back to the high street now that Covid restrictions have lifted. Every trail participant gets a certificate and a free, reusable, branded water bottle until 31 March. The bottles can be collected at Jojangles, The Make Space, The queens @ 46 and Chapel Street Boutiques.
“The trail is proving very popular,” said BID manager Anna Pascoe. “There is so much history in Camborne and this is an activity that makes people aware of our heritage whilst having fun and enjoying themselves.”
Air cadets are aged from 12 to 20. As well as learning a range of useful skills such as leadership and first aid, they can also study for a BTEC Level 2 in Aviation Studies.
