10-year-old Mia Richardson embarked on a marathon effort to raise money for the care home her mum, Bernie, works in on 2 April. Her goal was to run the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats – 1347 kilometres – on the family cross-trainer.
Since then, Mia, from Camborne, has so far completed nearly half the distance, raised more than £4700, been interviewed by at least twenty different radio stations across the country and appeared on three regional TV programmes.
As if that wasn’t enough, celebrities including actress Thandie Newton, physicist Professor Brian Cox and Olympians Ben Ainslie, Jo Pavey and Hannah Cockcroft have all messaged their support and contributed to her goal of buying an interactive Magic Table for residents at Cornwall Care’s Blackwood home in Camborne.
“It’s been exhausting but I’m so proud of what Mia is doing,” said her father, Dan. “There seems to be at least one broadcast interview each day – and sometimes as many as three. We’re tracking Mia’s progress on a map and finding out about the places she’s virtually visiting on the internet. It’s a good way of learning geography!”
Mia runs for about an hour each day and, although her legs get tired, is clearly very excited about her ongoing fundraising success.
“I do a happy dance for every new donation,” she said. “I run 20 kilometres a day which is hard, but I love seeing the total getting bigger and getting messages from famous people is cool. Mum is doing lots of hours in her job and this makes me feel like I’m helping her and the people she’s looking after.”
Bernie has worked for Cornwall Care for the last six years. The charity runs sixteen homes in the county and employs more than 1400 staff.
“I’m thrilled with what Mia is doing and the money she is raising,” said Cornwall Care CEO Anne Thomas. “Magic Tables are an amazing and transformative way of engaging residents, providing them with many wonderful hours of entertainment. Having one at Blackwood will be wonderful and I can’t thank Mia enough for her stamina and dedication to such a worthwhile cause.”
