Eleven of Cornwall’s leisure centres will be holding free Swim School Open Days this month with the aim of encouraging more people to learn to swim.
From free beginner taster sessions to synchronised swimming lessons, activities for each open day will vary depending on the location, but all will offer free swim assessments with qualified teachers. This will allow staff to ascertain what level would be appropriate for each swimmer to start at within the swim school whilst also introducing them to the types of swimming lessons they would be involved in.
GLL, which runs the county’s leisure centres on behalf of Cornwall Council, is the largest provider of swimming lessons in Cornwall. The swim school programme has been created to be flexible and affordable, with a large variety of lessons available to suit all ages and abilities – and follows Swim England’s Learn to Swim Programme.
“Living in a coastal community, swimming is a valuable life skill that enables families and individuals alike to enjoy activities in and around the coast safely,” said Amelia Kitchen, General Manager at St Austell Leisure Centre. “It is also a great way of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.
“Our Swim School programme helps people to learn to love the water and keep fit by becoming confident and capable swimmers.”
Newquay Waterworld, St Austell and Launceston Leisure Centres will be holding open days on Saturday 7th September, whilst Ships and Castles in Falmouth and Bodmin, Saltash, Truro, St Ives, Helston, Wadebridge and Liskeard leisure centres will be running their open days on Saturday 21st September.
Booking free taster sessions direct with the relevant leisure centre is advised.
