Amelia Kitchen and her team at St Austell Leisure Centre have won the South West Best Facility title at a national awards dinner in London, organised by not-for-profit social enterprise GLL.
The victory follows hot on the heels of St Austell winning GLL’s Cornwall Partnership Award for Leisure Centre of the Year in December and resulted in them seeing off stiff competition in the finals from GLL’s Bath Sports and Leisure Centre and Western Leisure Centre in Cardiff.
GLL Sports Foundation Ambassador and five-time Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds OBE, was the event’s guest speaker whilst swimming world record holder and award-winning broadcaster Ayo Akinwolere, was master of ceremonies.
“We’re absolutely delighted to have won such a prestigious internal award – especially against such tough opposition,” said Amelia. “Customers and community are at the heart of everything GLL stands for and does and, at St Austell, we work very hard to provide a good, all-round, great value experience for everyone who visits us. There’s never any room for complacency, though, so whilst we’ve over the moon with this achievement, we’ll go on improving as much as we possibly can.”
GLL runs more than 250 leisure centres and is the largest charitable social enterprise of its kind in the country. In April 2017, it took on a 25-year contract to run Cornwall’s network of leisure centres and sports amenities on behalf of the Council.
“I applaud all the staff at St Austell on their incredible achievement,” said Tim Webb, GLL’s Head of Leisure Facilities in Cornwall. “This is a well-deserved reward for their dedication and the immense amount of work they’ve put in over the last 12 months.”
