On Saturday 24th November Better, St Austell Leisure Centre will be holding an open day to celebrate the completion of their recent refurbishments, with British Paralympian Dave Wetherill performing two demonstrations as part of the day’s line up.

The activities available will include swimming, gym challenges and taster fitness classes, whilst visitors will also have the opportunity to meet the leisure centre’s fitness instructor team, watch rookie lifeguard demonstrations and sample delights from the new café menu. All activities will be free, however donations will be gratefully received for the centre’s chosen charity, Cancer Research UK.

Completed in April, the recent refurbishments carried out on the leisure centre include the creation of a new state-of-the-art gym complete with a variety of top of the range Technogym equipment and functional training areas, new studio with a sprung floor, mirrored wall and feature lighting, new male and female dryside changing areas and new group cycling bikes. Work has also been carried out to improve the café, wetside accessible and general changing areas, as well as a reception refresh.

“The recent refurbishments made to the leisure centre have already made such a difference and we look forward to sharing the fantastic new facilities and all they have to offer with those who attend the open day”, said General Manager, Amelia Kitchen. “The attendance of Dave Wetherill is very exciting. Having recently reached the quarter final stage of this year’s Table Tennis World Championships, seeing him in action will be a brilliant opportunity to see what the sport has to offer – inspiring people of all ages to have a go and get involved.

“Dave is a GLL Sports Foundation (GSF) Ambassador too and does a great job promoting its benefits. Thanks to the Foundation, 95 Cornish sportsmen, women and children are being supported in 2018.”

GLL runs Cornwall’s 13 leisure centres on behalf of Council and, as a social enterprise, re-invests all its surpluses into improvements. The organisation set up GSF ten years ago. 55 per cent of its Cornish beneficiaries are under 21 and 36 different sports in the county are currently included.

The open day will run between 10am – 4pm and is open to all ages. For further information regarding any of the activities taking place, please contact St Austell Leisure Centre on 01726 839 130.
