The Headland Hotel in Newquay has been shortlisted in the Best Regional Initiative category of this year’s Springboard Awards for Excellence.

Held to celebrate and reward outstanding success in the attraction, recruitment and retention of talent within hospitality, the awards attract entries from some of the finest hotels and hospitality providers across the UK and beyond. Previous winners include Hilton Hotels, The National Theatre and the London Cocktail Club.

The Springboard charity aims to help young people access training and skills development in hospitality, leisure and tourism, reduce unemployment and relieve poverty. The Headland team, led by Managing Director Darryl Reburn, has worked closely with them over the year – training Springboard ambassadors and mentors and going into local schools to talk to students and their parents. Other activities have included engaging with local and national forums that bring like-minded businesses together, collaborating to change perceptions of careers in the sector and addressing retention issues caused by Brexit.

“We’ve worked very hard to ensure that everything we do is sustainable in the future and are thrilled to have been shortlisted for this prestigious category,” said Darryl Reburn. “Our success with the Springboard partnership has led to us being asked to host Cornwall’s Tourism Takeover in November – an event that will see 140 students and their teachers participating in several ‘have a go’ activities and workshops.

“We’ve also formed a new partnership with Plymouth Hotel School which has resulted in us getting our first student placement this year and an event we organised with Truro & Penwith College earlier this summer saw Level 3 & 4 apprentices take over our Terrace restaurant and serve friends, family and interested students. We also offered an Open Evening for interested students who are looking for new opportunities.

“Hospitality is a wonderful industry to work in but, to make people aware of that, we have to do all that we can to promote it through work experience, mentoring, presentations and fun occasions like National Waiters’ Day.”

The other Best Regional Initiative finalists are the PPHE Hotel Group, global food and hospitality company Delaware North and Brown’s Pie Shop and Restaurant. This year’s winners will be announced at a special black-tie event in London on 19 October.
