More than £460,000 is being invested into modernising and refurbishing Better, Helston Sports Centre. Due to begin later this month, the work will include the construction of a brand new gym.

The gym will be created from a new mezzanine level, knocked through into the current studio, and filled with top of the range Technogym equipment. The existing gym will be transformed into a larger studio.

Charitable leisure social enterprise provider GLL is the company behind the makeover, having taken on a 25-year contract on 1 April last year to run the county’s network of leisure centres and sports amenities on behalf of Cornwall Council.

The refurbishment follows significant investment at other Better centres in the county.

“I’m really impressed with GLL’s investment and the work they’ve done to date,” said Mike Eathorne-Gibbons, Cornwall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Customers. “I was delighted to see the outcome of the work in St Austell and look forward to the completion of the refurbishment in Helston.”

Helston General Manager Matthew May says the team are excited about the improvements.

“This is a significant investment that will result in much better facilities,” he said. “Work has just begun and a temporary gym space is being made available from Saturday 30 June, with free weights in the sports hall. There will be no impact on the fitness class timetable.”

The work is expected to take several months.
