Subway has opened in the very heart of Camborne town centre and is already so popular the franchise owners are planning to extend opening hours.
On top of providing an additional source of take-away snacks for shoppers and visitors, the business has created eight new jobs. The positions have all been filled by people who live locally, mainly housewives and college students. Some have previous experience, but for several it’s their first job.
Subway is one of the fastest growing and most popular franchises in the world. Its signature product is the submarine sandwich and, in a recent industry survey, the chain was named the best provider of healthy options and came first in the ‘customer service’ and ‘most popular’ categories.
Yam and Jimmy Cai are the new owners of Camborne’s Subway. They already have two restaurants in Penzance but were drawn to Camborne’s vibrant high street for their newest venture.
“Camborne was our first choice as a location to open the shop because the town centre is so busy,” said Yam. “Our shop is directly opposite the town square so we’re literally at the very heart and of course that’s where the weekly market is held, an event that draws lots of customers.”
Yam explained that she was expecting the majority of clients to be young as Subway is generally associated with younger people, but in Camborne people of all ages have been visiting the shop.
“It’s been quite a surprise so far,” said Yam, “We’re attracting a much more varied client base than we were expecting although the choice of sandwich filling is far more traditional than we imagined – the favourites at the moment are tuna, turkey and ham.”
“Having Subway in Camborne’s high street is a great asset,” said BID Camborne Manager Mel Martin. “It adds to the diversity of food on offer and is guaranteed to improve footfall and visitor satisfaction.”
Subway, Trelowarren Street, is currently open from 7am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday and 8am until 7pm on a Sunday. Those hours are likely to be extended until 11pm on Friday and Saturday to meet customer demand.
Ends 2 July 2015
